Grand Opening - Heber Rec Center

Families and dignitaries gathered around under a shade tent and shaved ice truck as the summer heat popped balloon decorations before the ribbon was cut and doors were opened to the new, cool, Heber Public Utility District’s Recreation Center Friday, June 11, in Heber.

The facility, which is at the corner of Bloomfield Street and Littlefield Way, is currently the only designated rec center within the unincorporated community here.

In his opening remarks during the June 11 ceremony, HPUD board president Pompeyo Tabarez Jr. said the district plans to offer free or low-cost activities for the community at the center.

On the surface, the grand opening of Heber’s new Recreation Center marks about a year-long project for the erection of the building, said General Manager Laura Fischer, but locals also said it fills a need for a dedicated Rec Center, which the community has had for a long time, locals said.

Throughout the event, raffles were drawn, shaved ice treats were doled out, and tours were given of the four-room facility. The building consists of a main recreation room, two all-gender restrooms, and one office for future Heber recreation staff.
